Description

This brief, skills-focused, and highly interactive presentation of public speaking emphasizes the newest research methods and critical listening and thinking.

The Essential Elements of Public Speaking is a concise exploration of the ins and outs of public speaking and makes a clear link between theory and practice–all in only twelve chapters.

Features

  • Provides an overview of the entire public speaking process at the beginning of the book (Ch. 1) that gives students the information necessary to begin practicing their public speaking skills at the start of the course.
  • Includes 22 "Research Link" boxes (instead of a full, dense chapter on research) throughout the text, offering students valuable insight into conducting and evaluating research.
  • Incorporates 16 "Critical Listening/Thinking Link" boxes that, much like the “Research Links,” present techniques students can use on a daily basis to become more critical public speakers and listeners.
  • Highlights technology in marginal "Using Technology" items that integrate Web exploration and its research potential into every chapter and teach students how to use and evaluate research on the Web.
  • Offers "Developing Strategies" marginal items that help students to think about the choices they face in preparing and presenting public speeches.
  • Presents students with "A Case of Ethics" boxes in every chapter, teaching them about the ethical issues involved in public speaking and stimulating them to make choices based on ethical considerations.

New To This Edition

  • “The Benefits of Public Speaking” in Chapter 1 and at the beginning of each chapter provides an orientation and focus to the chapter contents, while discussing the value of public speaking.
  • The “Analyzing and Adapting to Your Audience” chapter now precedes the “Using Supporting Materials and Visual Aids” chapter, emphasizing the importance of audience analysis while researching and writing your speech.
  • This edition presents a progression of sample speeches that are realistic models and more useful for students.   The sample speeches in Chapters 2 and 3 are purposely poor to illustrate the pitfalls to avoid and to complement the chapters’ discussions of effective public speaking principles.   The remaining sample speeches in the text are all excellent models of various public speaking concepts.
  • New speech excerpts appear throughout the text (especially in Chs. 6 and 11) and there is one new informative speech (Ch. 4) and one new persuasive speech ( Ch. 10).
  • All “ Research Link ” boxes now include a “Research Activity,” which provides directions for using the material discussed in the “ Research Link ” box.
  • Instead of the one Critical Listening/Thinking box on fallacies in the previous edition, this edition includes three: fallacies of language in Chapter 7 and fallacies of personal attacks and fallacies of pseudo-argument, both in Chapter 10.
  • All of the box materials have been revised extensively and now focus more clearly on the development of practical public speaking skills.
  • A new glossary is now available on the Companion Website (http://www.ablongman.com/devito2e).

Chapter-by-Chapter Changes:

  • Chapter 1 (Introducing Public Speaking) revisions include new discussions of the roots of public speaking and expanded discussions of the benefits of public speaking and of ways to reduce apprehension. Also included is the NCA credo on ethical communication.
  • Chapter 2 (Listening and Criticism) revisions include new discussions of the benefits of listening and guides to listening ethically as well as a new exercise on barriers to listening.
  • Chapter 3 (Selecting Your Topic, Purpose, and Thesis) includes an expanded discussion of taboo topics and a new exercise on cultural beliefs.
  • Chapter 4 (Analyzing and Adapting to Your Audience), Chapter 5 in the previous edition, now includes discussions of audience assumptions, cautions about using cultural data, affectional orientation, and persons with disabilities.
  • Chapter 5 (Using Supporting Materials and Visual Aids), Chapter 4 in the previous edition, now features a special box on plagiarism–what it is, why it’s unacceptable, and how it can be avoided--a revised section on statistics, new PowerPoint slides for illustrating the slide show speech, and two new exercises on amplification and testimony.
  • Chapter 6 (Organizing Your Speech) now includes a more extended illustration of how cultural differences can be reflected in organizational patterns and a detailed annotated outline using the Motivated Sequence.
  • Chapter 7 (Wording Your Speech) includes a discussion of ageism, persons with disabilities, and cautions in using ethnic expressions as well as a box on fallacies of reasoning centering on language.
  • Chapter 8 (Delivering Your Speech) includes advice for before and after the speech and a new exercise on communicating with paralanguage.
  • Chapter 9 (Informing Your Audience) includes identifications of other classifications of information speeches and a discussion of how to make your speech more memorable.
  • Chapter 10 (Persuading Your Audience) now includes an introductory section on the goals of persuasion, two boxes on fallacies: personal attacks and pseudo-argument, a summary of the motivated sequence as a persuasive strategy, and a focus on three types of persuasive speeches: questions of fact, questions of value, and questions of policy.
  • Chapter 11 (Speaking on Special Occasions) now includes the famous farewell speech by Cal Rifkin, Jr.
  • Chapter 12 (Speaking in Small Groups) now includes a new self-test on leadership that clarifies the four approaches to leadership and two new exercises on responding to individual roles and combating groupthink.
