Description

Geared toward helping students visualize and apply mathematics, Elementary Algebra: Graphs and Models uses illustrations, graphs, and graphing technology to enhance students' mathematical skills. This is accomplished through Interactive Discoveries, Algebraic/Graphical Side-by-Sides, and the incorporation of real-data applications. In addition, students are taught problem-solving skills using the Bittinger hallmark five-step problem-solving process coupled with Connecting the Concepts and Aha! exercises. And, as you have come to expect with any Bittinger text, we bring you a complete supplements package that now includes an Annotated Instructor's Edition and MyMathLab, Addison-Wesley's online course solution.

Features

  • Algebraic/Graphical Side-by-Sides Algebraic/Graphical Side-by-Sides give students a direct comparison between these two problem-solving methods. They appeal to both algebraic and visual learners and emphasize that there is more than one way to obtain a result. This approach also illustrates the comparative efficiency and accuracy of the two methods.
  • Interactive Discoveries Interactive Discoveries invite students to develop analytical and reasoning skills while taking an active role in the learning process. These discoveries can be used as lecture launchers to introduce new topics at the start of a class or as an independent guided discovery of a new concept.
  • Connecting the Concepts To help students understand the “big picture,”Connecting the Concepts subsections within each chapter relate the concept at hand to previously learned and upcoming concepts. Because students may occasionally “lose sight of the forest because of the trees,” this feature will help them keep better track of their bearings as they encounter new material.
  • Five-Step Problem-Solving Process Bittinger's five-step problem-solving process (Familiarize, Translate, Carry Out, Check, State) is introduced early in the text and used consistently throughout whenever students encounter an application problem. This provides students with a consistent framework for solving application problems.
  • Chapter Openers Each chapter opens with a real-data application, including a data table (numerical representation) and usually a graphical representation of the data. Data tables and graphs are used frequently throughout the body of the text to appeal to diverse learning styles.
  • Use of Color There is a very intentional pedagogical use of color in the graphs (y1 is black, y2 is red, y3 is blue) and other technical art. Lines are both labeled and color-coded. This consistent use of color in the art and design makes the presentation more attractive and easier to read.
  • Annotated Examples Learning is carefully guided with numerous color-coded art pieces and step-by-step annotations alongside examples. Substitutions and annotations are highlighted in red so students can see exactly what is happening in each step.
  • Collaborative Corners Collaborative Corner exercises appear approximately three times per chapter, after the section exercise set. These optional activities provide instructors and students the opportunity to incorporate group learning.
  • Real-Data Applications Real-data applications, often denoted in examples and exercises with a source line, serve to motivate students by showing them how the mathematics they are studying in their text relates to their everyday lives.
  • Exercise Sets The exercise sets provide ample opportunity for students to practice what they have learned. A variety of types of exercises are included in order to reach different levels of understanding. These include skill-based, discussion and writing, skill maintenance, Aha!, graphing-calculator encouraged, and synthesis exercises.
  • Study Tips To help students develop good study habits throughout this course, Study Tips are found in the margins and interspersed throughout the first seven chapters. These tips range from how to approach assignments, to reminders of the various study aids that are available, to strategies for preparing for a final exam.
  • Aha! In an effort to discourage rote learning and reward students who “look before they leap” into a problem, these exercises can be solved quickly if the student has the proper insight. The Aha! designation is used the first time a new insight can be used on a particular type of exercise and indicates to the student that there is a simpler way to complete the exercise that requires less lengthy computation. It's then up to the student to find the simpler approach and determine if and when that particular insight can be used again in subsequent exercises.
  • Technology Throughout each chapter, optional graphing calculator examples help students use this technology to better visualize a concept that they have just learned. To connect this feature to the exercise sets, certain exercises are marked with a graphing calculator icon and reinforce the use of this optional technology.
  • Annotated Instructor's Edition The Annotated Instructor's Edition includes all the answers to the exercise sets, usually right on the page where the exercises appear, and has Teaching Tips in the margins that give insights and classroom discussion suggestions that will be especially useful for new instructors. These handy answers and ready Teaching Tips will help both new and experienced instructors save preparation time.
