Description

Through the presentation of detailed case studies, this book illustrates the foundations, key concepts, and developmentally appropriate practices of early childhood education, while fostering professional development.

A unique case approach is the hallmark of this text; chapters seven through twelve focus on stories of real children in a way that offers a personal look into early childhood settings for children ages Birth - 8.  With a manageable length and readable narrative, the fourth edition of this popular introductory text provides an overview of the foundations, while fostering professional development and advocacy, reflective teaching and learning, and best practices for children and their families.  In addition to seven foundational chapters, each of six chronologically organized, age-related chapters integrates a profile of one child, his or her family and community, and educational/ care giving situation along with the best practices for working with a child of that age. In these chapters, students observe developmentally appropriate practices in authentic settings.  Through the case studies, theory, and journal reflection activities, students learn to incorporate new concepts and best practices for young children with their own experiences. This learning process serves as the foundation for a lifelong journey of working with young children in a variety of early childhood education settings.

Features

  • Six chapters covering the chronological range of ages and stages in early childhood (Chapters 7-12) provide integrated case studies that profile the educational/care giving situation of one young child, including a description of his or her family, support system, and interactions with others.  Cases cover an in-depth look at a range of ECE programs, from employer-sponsored infant care to a mixed-age primary grade class in a public school.
  • Journal activities throughout each chapter encourage students to pause and write about their own experiences as compared to those in the book and to reflect on the meaning of their observations for future Early Childhood Education roles.
  • Curriculum, assessment, family, and guidance issues are each called out with an icon to help students apply the information to real-life settings.
  • MyLabSchool Video feature at the end of each chapter directs students to look at specific video clips of real-life early childhood settings that relate to concepts in the chapter.
  • Conversations about Inclusion boxes feature parents, teachers and administrators discussing the significance of inclusion and what it means in practice.
  • A Closer Look boxes provide in-depth looks at significant current issues, such as brain research, the project approach, Reggio Emilia, etc.
  • Chapter-closing Becoming an Early Childhood Professional section includes professional portfolio activities and bibliographical resources to enhance student learning.

New To This Edition

  • New! Attention to current issues affecting young children, including stress, obesity, and fears prompted by war and terrorism, and their implications for children’s play and ECE curriculum, help future teachers prepare for a sophisticated approach to guidance and understanding of young children.
  • Increased discussion of using technology in early childhood programs and related examples and activities show pre-service teachers how to appropriately support children’s development and learning with media.
  • The latest data on family health coverage, stress, poverty, and homelessness provides a comprehensive picture of diverse families in the U.S. and current trends in family configurations.
  • Increased coverage (throughout eight chapters) of physical/motor skills, outdoor play spaces and activities, and health and safety issues includes sketches of playgrounds and guides to help future teachers with safety issues.

“The text is excellent. It addresses most of our state’s competencies as well as the NAEYC common core of knowledge and skills.  I think the pedagogy of the book is its strength. I love the Journal Reflection questions and also the Professional Portfolio sections.”

        -                      Kathy Allen, Blue Ridge Community College, NC

“The goals and objectives of the course that I teach, Introduction to Early Childhood Education, are thoroughly covered in this text.  All chapters are written with an ‘interactive’ component that encourages students to be active participants in their own learning.”
