Logos, Pathos, and Ethos: Discovering Arguments presents the classical persuasive appeals throughout the text as the essential argument paradigm.
Five unique “interchapters” on style and voice — after each of the first five chapters.
~Enables students to learn about language in positive ways so they can excel at what they say as well as how they say it. Through guided activities students learn how to use semicolons, colons, and dashes to connect their thoughts in more powerful ways. Students learn how to use repetition, parallel structure, and sentence variety. ~ Each style interchapter contains numerous embedded activities to reinforce the concepts and directs students immediately to extend those concepts to their own drafts. Interchapters also guide students on how to solve common problems with diction, punctuation, and sentences.
The Foundation Chapter. In Chapter 1, students learn about writing an opinion essay using their own experience and knowledge for supporting evidence. They examine three model essays written by college students and published in the “My Turn” column of Newsweek. Students see that they too can write about issues that matter to them and to others. Chapter 1 introduces students to the process of thinking and to the persuasive appeals of logos, pathos, and ethos, guiding students to use them intentionally in their opinion essay. The chapter also includes the clearest, most comprehensive advice on writing engaging titles, introductions and conclusions of any textbook on the market. Chapter 1 provides a strong foundation for students as they progress through the book.
Strategies of Argumentation. Chapter 3 begins with an expanded section on using opposites to help students generate and analyze ideas. Students examine contradictions and paradoxes to find topics for their own writing. They learn to develop a higher tolerance for ambiguity and a lower tolerance for either/or thinking. No other textbook encourages students to examine dialectical thinking as fully as this book does. In this chapter students also discover ways to use creative thinking skills—such as writing analogies—to complement critical thinking skills. This chapter ends with students invited to write an essay defining a word, drawing from the strategies presented.
Over 200 guided discovery activities throughout the text-- systematically lead students to understand the most important ideas in argumentation and to apply them immediately to their own writing, reading and thinking.
