Description

For courses on Deviance.

This best-selling text offers comprehensive coverage of all aspects of deviance and is noted for its blend of style and substance.  Deviant Behavior covers a wide spectrum of theories of deviance, and analyzes numerous specific deviant behaviors. The author uses an abundance of research data, including many that debunk our common assumptions about deviant behavior. Students are exposed to the full range of theories and data about deviance, and are challenged to think about and evaluate their own biases and preconceptions.

Features

Exposes your students to the latest research, data and theories:

  • Provide a comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of all aspects of deviance.
  • A presentation of new, updated materials on important and interesting topics.
    •  For example, a new discussion of the death penalty as a deterrent for murder, new research that finds a difference in brain structures between gay people and straight people, a new review of 30 studies in various countries indicating that drug users are much more likely than nonusers to commit a crime, a recent study suggesting that the perpetrators of murder-suicide kill their victims as a way of demonstrating their dominance or control over them, new statistics showing many more billions of dollars being spent on drug law enforcement than on prevention and treatment.

Helps your students make the connection between theory and concrete deviance:

  • A lively writing style, real-life vignettes, critical analyses of theories and data, and student-oriented examples help lead to greater understanding of the material presented.
  • The theories in the behavior chapters (Chs. 4-14) are shown as related to, rather than independent of, the general perspectives and theories in first three chapters enabling students to make connections.
  • A unique organization. Traditionally, deviance texts are divided into only two parts, with a few theory chapters in the first part and then multiple chapters on diverse forms of deviant behavior lumped together into the second part. In this edition, Part I contains the theory chapters, and Parts II-VI are divided into five distinct parts as follows: (1) Interpersonal Violence, (2) Self-Targeted Deviance, (3) Diverse Lifestyles, (4) Drug Use, and (5) Inequality in Deviance.
  • Connection between general theories and concrete deviances. The theories in the behavior chapters (Chapters 4-15) are shown how they are related to the general perspectives and theories in the first three chapters enabling students to make connections.
  •  Ask students to analyze their own assumptions about deviant behavior.

Pedagogical Features

  • The “Global Perspective” sections are found in each deviant behavior chapter (Chs. 4-14) compare deviance in the United States to deviance in other parts of the world—a critically important approach in the globalization of our lives and society today. The boxes include such deviances as homicide, homophobia, smoking, drinking, and organized crime.
  • “Social Profile” sections are integrated in each behavior chapter (Chapters 4 -15). Each box spotlights a certain group of deviants such as suicide bombers, depressed teens, swinging couples, college binge drinkers, corporate crooks.
  • Critical Thinking questions at the end of each chapter enable students to ponder what they have just learned about the subject and to develop new ways of seeing and understanding it. Such questions include, among others, “If in fighting the war on drugs you had to choose between law enforcement and prevention/treatment, which would you opt for? Why?”

New To This Edition

This updated and revised text takes into account many significant and interesting new studies by sociologists and other behavioral scientists as well as suggestions and criticisms from the reviewers and adopters of this book. The most significant updatings and revisions include the following:

Chapter 2 (Positivist Theories)

  • New opening vignette about the shootings at Virginia Tech University, showing how the search for the causes of this tragedy exemplifies the pursuit of positivist theories.
  • A new study indicates how certain factors such as gender and ADHD can strengthen the impact of strain on deviance.

Chapter 3 (Constructionist Theories

  • New opening vignette about the increased difficulty of getting an abortion, which reflects the increased support for the idea that abortion is a deviant act. But pro-life forces do not see abortion as deviant. These conflicting views on whether a certain act is deviant or not suggest that deviance is a matter of perception rather than actual behavior, which is the essential point of constructionist theories.

Chapter 4 (Physical Violence)

  • New opening vignette about a young suicide bomber killing and wounding many students before he was shot dead. The bomber fits the typical profile of a suicide terrorist. Also, more recent data are given on the perpetrators of murder-suicide.
  •  School violence is extensively revised and updated.
  • More information on stalking and genocide is offered. The issue of whether the death penalty deters murder is substantially revised.

Chapter 5 (Rape and Child Molestation)

  • New opening vignette about three high school students charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in their school, which illustrates one of the major forms of sexual violence relatively common in the United States.
  • New data further clarify (1) the myth that victims of rape contribute to their victimization  and (2) the nature of male rape that takes place outside the prison.

Chapter 6 (Family Violence)

  • New data shows how elders are abused by their family members.

Chapter 7 (Suicide)

  • New opening vignetter about how a college student committed suicide, which as a cause of death ranks second among young people, after motor-vehicle accidents.
  • New information further shows (1) higher suicide rates among professionals such as physicians, (2) controversy over whether antidepressant drugs increase the risk of teen suicide, (3) why smaller living-and-learning environments in college protect students against suicide, and (4) the cause of the soaring suicide rate among young men in Norway.

Chapter 8 (Mental Disorder)

  • New opening vignette about a lawyer who has struggled with depression for nearly a decade, an example of mental disorder besetting millions of Americans.
  • Other new materials include the popular belief about the epidemic of autism among children, the continuing dominance of the biological view in the psychiatric profession, and the gender factor in the development of internally oriented mental disorder.

Chapter 9 (Heterosexual Deviance)

  • Presents new data which shows many female teenagers engaging in oral sex though with just one partner
  • New data shows most men in Denmark finding hardcore pornography beneficial to their lives
  • More information about nude dancing, sexual harassment, call girls, and pimps.

Chapter 10 (Gays and Other Victims of Stigma)

  • New research in Sweden finding a difference in brain structures between gays and straights
  • New research on a recent study suggesting why heterosexual women with an AIDS-afflicted relative tend to engage in homoerotic activities.

Chapter 11 (Drug Use)

  • New review of 30 studies in various countries indicating that drug users are much more likely than nonusers to commit a crime
  • A new statistics showing many more billions of dollars being spent on drug law enforcement than on prevention and treatment
  • New survey indicating a relatively high rate of cigarette smoking among the very young--from age 12 to 17.

Chapter 12 (Drinking and Alcoholism)

  • Opens with an updated vignette that dramatizes binge drinking on campus.
  • Presents new conflicting studies on whether teenagers are more, or less, likely to binge drink when drinking with parents.

Chapter 13 (Privileged Deviance)

  • Updated vignette about a corporate executive caught stealing regularly from his company.
  • New example of deviance against the government perpetrated by a German technology giant corporation.

Chapter 14  (Underprivileged Deviance)

  • New vignette about street gangs engaging in various underprivileged deviances.
  • Includes the new observation that robbers today are more likely to use a gun than before and why.

Chapter 15 (Internet Deviance)

  • An updated vignette suggesting why online deviance is a very common problem.
