Description

The concise and affordable Penguin Academic Edition of College Success Strategies teaches students the skills and strategies that will enable them to be lifelong learners capable of knowing how to approach new and challenging material in college and beyond.

Although the first priority of College Success Strategies is to help students learn effectively in their college courses, the skills they learn from this text will serve them well in the future in a variety of learning situations. College Success Strategies is designed to engage students in thought about their own learning and the important role they play in the learning process.

The strategies used in this book are based on the authors’ many years of experience interacting with college students and professors, as well as their own research focusing on how college students study. Students are often unprepared for the study demands of college and therefore overwhelmed and frustrated with the work. This text is designed to help students obtain lifelong methods and strategies to achieve success in college and beyond.

Features

  • Affordable quality is the hallmark feature of the Penguin Academic Series. A compact, trade-format size and streamlined narrative makes this book both easy to handle and easy to read. Its brevity and low cost allows instructors to easily supplement the basic text with other books, including those on the list of Penguin titles offered at a deep discount as part of the Longman/Penguin Program.
  • Multiple-chapter coverage of reading strategies and techniques prepares students for the intake and synthesis of information from textbooks and other academic sources.
  • “Real College” scenarios provide opportunities for students to reflect on what they've learned by reading and responding to a scenario of a student experiencing an academic difficulty related to each chapter topic. Instructors can use the scenarios to assess student learning.
  • “Success at a Glance” visually depicts important information in graphs and charts.
  • “Self Evaluation” quizzes in each chapter allow students to assess themselves and reflect on their own learning before reading about a topic. This helps students relate the content to their own lives.
  • “Networking” features discuss a variety of ways to use technology to learn. Some are activities students can do and others are suggestions for incorporating technology to enhance learning.
  • “Studying Smarter” feature provides quick and easy tips or inspirational quotations for students to get a jump on their learning and studying.
  • “Thinking critically” feature provides topics for class discussion about the strategies and ideas presented in each chapter. Instructors can use these questions as a part of the class, or students may use them to review and reflect on the concepts presented in the chapter.
  • "Add To Your Portfolio" allows students to apply each strategy presented in the book.
  • "Get Going" focuses on tips and strategies for gaining motivation and overcoming procrastination.
  • "Timely Tips" centers on strategies for time management.

New To This Edition

  • Chapters 10 and 11 from the second edition were streamlined into one chapter (Chapter 10) titled “Strategic Reading.”
  • Chapters 12 and 13 were also streamlined into one chapter (Chapter 12) titled “Rehearsal and Review Strategies.”
  • The chapter on note taking, now Chapter 11, was updated and now includes four different types of note-taking formats.
  • Three new chapters focusing specifically on one discipline and contain information on: characteristics, figuring out the task, reading texts, including how to gear up and how and what to annotate, taking notes, and studying, and when and how to vary or modify studying behaviors.
    • Chapter 13, “Strategies for Social Science”
    • Chapter 14, “Strategies for Humanities”
    • Chapter 15, “Strategies for Science and Mathematics”
  • A new sidebar, On Your Own, encourages reflection by asking students to think about how they might apply what they have learned to other courses in which they are enrolled.
  • The Networking sidebar helps students understand how to use technology as a learning tool by emphasizing that understanding how to use technology is a necessity, not a luxury.
  • A new full sample chapter has been added, bring the total to three.
