Description

One of the top sellers in the field, Cognitive Psychology is well-written, humorous, and remains the most comprehensive and balanced text in the area of undergraduate cognition. MacLin and MacLin, inheriting the textbook from the late Robert L. Solso, boldly revised and reorganized the Eighth Edition to reflect emerging trends in the field, while retaining the strengths that made it one of the most popular texts among students and professors. The text features a sequential model of human cognition from sensation to perception, to attention, to memory, to higher-order cognition, and features new cutting-edge coverage of consciousness, cognitive neuroscience, memory and forgetting, and evolutionary psychology.

Features

  • Provides a historical framework for the modern issues in cognition, enabling students to see the evolution of the field.
  • Includes recent studies in cognitive neuroscience and artificial intelligence, keeping the material as up-to-date as possible for today's students.
  • Offers “preview questions” to assist students in reading and digesting information.
  • Asks students to consider how cognitive psychology manifests itself daily in “Cognition in Everyday Life” boxes.
  • Involves students through “Try This!” boxes, which focus on an easy activity or observation for students to try.

New To This Edition

  • All chapters underwent a thorough revision with special attention to updating the art package, and examples, as well as clarifying the language, and making cognitive content in the narrative of the text more readily available to the student. Reviewer feedback was extensive and provided the basis for many of the changes in this edition.
  • Chapter one has been rewritten to streamline and clarify content and explicitly address research methodologies in cognitive psychology.
  • The consciousness chapter has been rewritten to include philosophical and scientific approaches to the study of consciousness and retains information on states of consciousness.
  • The cognitive neuroscience chapter has been updated and revised.
  • The adaptive nature of cognitive functioning has been woven throughout the book, starting with a more detailed discussion in chapter one of evolutionary psychology.
  • The language chapters have been streamlined and condensed into one chapter.
  • The cognitive development chapter has been expanded to include cognition of older adults. (Now called Cognition across the Lifespan)
  • The memory chapters have been reorganized to cover memory models and short term memory in one chapter, and long term memory in the next chapter.
  • There is a new chapter on Forgetting and Remembering that includes content from the old Mnemonics and Experts chapters, and brand new content on forgetting. Information on Experts has now been incorporated throughout the book in the chapters relevant to the content of the expertise.
  • A la Carte: this section at the end of every chapter, highlights timely, methodologically interesting, or applied issues relevant to the chapter content to provide a glimpse into the emerging aspects of the discipline.

Solso, boldly revised and reorganized the Eighth Edition to reflect emerging trends in the field, while retaining the strengths that made it one of the most popular texts among students and professors.  All chapters have undergone a thorough revision, with special attention to updating art and examples, as well as clarifying language.  The text traces a sequential model of human cognition from sensation to perception, to attention, to memory, to higher-order cognition, and features new cutting-edge coverage of consciousness, cognitive neuroscience, memory and forgetting, and evolutionary psychology.

The authors have done an outstanding job of making very complex material accessible to students.  The text is very readable, and uses real life examples to engage students.

Thomas R. Shaffer, South Dakota State University

The main strength of this textbook is the focus on cognition in everyday life.  When students make a connection [from] the information in the textbook to their own lives, they are more apt to learn it and use it.”

Angie MacKewn, University of Tennessee at Martin

The engaging writing style and organization clearly distinguishes it from other texts.  In addition, the emphasis on neuroscientific underpinnings of cognition is a major strength, pushing this text to the forefront of research in cognitive psychology.”

David Ludden, Lindsey Wilson College, Kentucky
