Description

Biology of Humans: Concepts, Applications, and Issues, Third Edition personalizes the study of human biology with a friendly writing style, stunning art, abundant applications, and tools to help students develop critical-thinking skills. With clarity, currency, and consistency, the authors give students a conceptual framework for understanding how their bodies work and for dealing with issues relevant to human health in the modern world. Students will gain an appreciation for the intricacy of the human body and the place of humans in the ecosphere.

The Third Edition features an expansion of the critical thinking elements, two new Special Topics chapters, and a significantly revised art program.

Features

  • A stunning illustration program uses vibrant, three-dimensional figures to enhance the explanation in the text.  Multi-step art features voice balloons to aid the reader in following complex processes. Micrographs are incorporated into figures where appropriate to provide students with context.
  • Special Topic Chapters expand “pure biology” to cover issues with an interest in personal health more thoroughly than can be done in an essay. Educators who prefer to teach an applied human biology course can use these chapters to go into greater depth with specific applied topics.
  • “Stop and Think" features engage students in the learning process and promote active learning. Students are invited to pause, think about the concept previously explained, and apply that information to a new situation.
  • “What would you do?” Questions raise ethical questions about issues that society faces today. Students are able to see the relevance of information learned in a biology classroom to real-life problems or decisions that society must make.
  • Health, Ethical, and Environmental Issues Essays explore contemporary topics that directly relate to students’ lives and motivate them to make connections to the world around them.
  • A clear and engaging writing style uses first-person narrative; analogies and applications are woven throughout to engage the reader and clearly explain concepts.

New To This Edition

  • New art program! Every vibrant, three-dimensional figure has been revised and enlarged to enhance readability and to illuminate explanations in the text. Selected illustrations include new figure legend questions, making the art program as instructive as it is beautiful.
  • Redesigned Critical Thinking features (“Stop and Think” and “What Would You Do?”) are now more prominent and visually compelling components of every chapter. Figure questions have been added to encourage students to think critically while reviewing the art.
  • New unique Special Topics provide timely discussions on Food Safety (Chapter 2a) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (Chapter 18a). Eight of these unique chapters are included throughout the text, and each provides and in-depth exploration of a health topic that is of personal interest to students.
  • An increased emphasis on Ethical Issues presents balanced coverage of controversial issues in the news today, ending  issue boxes with critical thinking questions that ask students to make up their own minds. More “Ethical Issues” and “Environmental Issues” boxes appear in this edition.
  • ABC News videos have been added to complement the content in the text. Thirteen new videos have been added for a total of 28 videos.
  • NEW! Becoming Information Literate Exercises prompt students to explore and evaluate resources beyond the text and can be used as starting points for developing research papers or reports.
  • NEW! Human Biology Animations with accompanying tutorials and activities, BioFlix, BLAST animations, and Scientific American: Concepts and Current Issues in Biology lecture presentations are included in the Instructor Resource DVD.

Author Bios

Judith Goodenough

Judith received her B.S. from Wagner College (Staten Island, NY), and her doctorate from New York University. She has 30 years of teaching experience at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, specializing in introductory level courses. The insights into student concerns and problems–gained from more than 25 years of teaching Human Biology and 20 years of team-teaching The Biology of Social Issues–have helped shape this book. In 1986, Judith was honored with a “Distinguished Teaching Award.” In addition to teaching, she has written articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed chapters to several introductory biology texts, and written numerous laboratory manuals. With the author team of McGuire and Jakob, she is preparing Perspectives on Animal Behavior.

Betty McGuire

Betty received her B.S. in Biology from Pennsylvania State University, where she also played varsity basketball. She went on to receive an M.S. and Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and then spent two happy years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Her field and laboratory research emphasize the social behavior and reproduction of small mammals. She has published numerous research papers, co-authored the text Perspectives on Animal Behavior as well as several introductory biology study guides, and served as an Associate Editor for Mammalian Species, a publication of the American Society of Mammalogists. Betty taught Human Biology, Introductory Biology, Vertebrate Biology, and Animal Behavior at Smith College. She now teaches Mammalogy and The Vertebrates: Structure, Function, and Evolution at Cornell University.
