 Content Updates:

  • The sections on problem solving in Chapter 2 have been revised to make them more accessible to students. The changes include:
    • Section 2.5, An Introduction to Problem Solving, has been reorganized into three objectives: solving problems involving direct translation; solving problems involving relationships among unknown quantities; and finding consecutive integers
    • A new Section 2.7, Percent and Mixture Problem Solving, covers percent equations, discount and mark-up, percentage increase and decrease, and, mixture applications.
    • Section 2.8, Further Problem Solving, now covers distance, money, and, interest applications.
  • Appendix C contains additional exercises on solving proportion and proportion applications.  This appendix may be used to augment Section 7.6 on this material or used to place proportions at any appropriate place during the course. 
  • There is now one section on Equations of Lines (Section 3.5) that reviews the slope-intercept form and introduces the point-slope form.  This section now contains mixed exercises that help students decide what equation form to use.
  • Section 6.4, Factoring Trinomials of the Form ax2 + bx + c by Grouping, is new for those instructors who prefer this method of factoring trinomials.
  • Appendix A.2 provides a Practice Final Exam for students. Students can watch author Elayn Martin-Gay work through the complete solutions to all Practice Final Exam exercises on the Interactive DVD Lecture Series.
  • The introduction to reading graphs has been moved from Chapter 1 to Chapter 3.  Although simple bar and circle graphs with data labels remain in Chapters 1 and 2, the formal introduction of reading graphs is now in Section 3.1.

Author Bios

An award-winning instructor and best-selling author, Elayn Martin-Gay has taught mathematics at the University of New Orleans for more than 25 years. Her numerous teaching awards include the local University Alumni Association’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Developmental Educator at University of New Orleans, presented by the Louisiana Association of Developmental Educators.

 

Prior to writing textbooks, Elayn developed an acclaimed series of lecture videos to support developmental mathematics students in their quest for success. These highly successful videos originally served as the foundation material for her texts. Today, the videos are specific to each book in the Martin-Gay series. Elayn also pioneered the Chapter Test Prep Video to help students as they prepare for a test—their most “teachable moment!”

 

Elayn’s experience has made her aware of how busy instructors are and what a difference quality support makes. For this reason, she created the Instructor-to-Instructor video series. These videos provide instructors with suggestions for presenting specific math topics and concepts in basic mathematics, Prealgebra, beginning algebra, and intermediate algebra. Seasoned instructors can use them as a source for alternate approaches in the classroom. New or adjunct faculty may find the CDs useful for review.
