The Art of Seeing explores traditional and contemporary art and artistic media focusing on art as seen from the artist's point of view.  The book introduces students to artistic techniques and introductory aesthetic principles. It provides clear, concise presentation, superb illustrations, and strong emphasis on the elements and media.

Do you approach your art appreciation/introduction to art course from the artist's perspective?

  • A focus on art as seen from the artist's point of view provides students with an informed understanding of the fine and applied arts of the world.
  • An emphasis on aesthetics and art techniques provides students with details about the philosophical foundations, elements, principles of design, and technical considerations of each medium.  This conveys  a sense of what artists are really trying to do and how.
  • Four-part organization—Part I lays the foundation for seeing; Parts II and III view two-and three-dimensional art; and Part IV approaches art as it exists in time.   Students are introduced to basic aesthetic works of art, and the materials and techniques used by artists.
