Description

Applying Counseing Theories: An Online, Case-Based Approach offers the power of the Web and the promise of a true understanding of counseling theories. Unique in product design and intellectual approach, it combines a book, interactive cases and web-based learning into one innovative product.  A central goal of this product is to help readers grasp the fundamental principles that govern the application of 16 counseling theories. From Freud to Feminism, the authors distill each theory into core principles for applying each theory. Each chapter translates the formal concepts, assumptions, and techniques of the theory into user-friendly guidelines for working with clients.  Reading the book, one learns the essence of applying each theory and can delve into the original theorist’s work, comprehensive theory books, or eclectic counseling approaches with clarity and understanding.  Each chapter is authored by a counselor or therapist who uses that particular theory as a foundation for his or her work with clients. Three compelling video cases on the companion website (www.prenhall.com/rochlen) caputure the intake interviews of three diverse clients, ranging in age from 17 to 54, and their unique presenting problems and concerns. From each theoretical perspective, users of the website are scaffolded through an analysis of the video cases to help them conceptualize each case using the foundational concepts discussed by the authors in the book.  Flexible enough to support any core theories text, it is also simple enough for all course delivery modes. Using this multi-sensory approach, readers learn what therapists do, why they do it, and how basic theories can be applied in clinical settings.

Features

  • Each chapter offers a practitioner’s point-of-view-written by an educator or therapist counseling from that perspective.
  • Three compelling cases capture the lives of Elena, Jane and Theo and their unique presenting problems and concerns-Ranging in age from 17 to 54, these individuals are from diverse ethnic backgrounds, have been referred to counseling from various sources, and present with a range of issues. Using the innovative Web site, readers learn first-hand about these individual’s lives, thoughts and emotions and about how to approach counseling these clients using the framework of specific counseling theories.
  • As a central piece of this powerful product, web-based videos capture the client and therapist intake interview-More than a demonstration, these segments provide the raw data needed to analyze cases and apply counseling theories to clinical practice. Each video is twelve minutes in length and covers presenting concerns, family background, interpersonal history and coping strategies. Watching these videos brings one closer to the client and to the counseling process.
  • Supporting the clinical video, written intake interviews appear on the Web site and provide additional information about each client-These intakes help readers conceptualize the case.
  • Adding an integrative, realistic dimension to the experience, case analysis sections offer an opportunity to engage in practice-based learning.

Applying Counseling Theories: An Online, Case-Based Approach

Aaron B. Rochlen

Applying Counseling Theories: An Online, Case-Based Approach offers the power of the Web and the promise of a true understanding of counseling theories. Unique in product design and intellectual approach, it combines a book, video cases, and interactice Web-based learning. The central goal of this product is to help users begin to understand what the 16 counseling theories covered in the book and on the Website look like in practice.

  • Each chapter is authored by a counselor/therapist who uses that particular theory as a foundation for his or her work with clients. These authors were asked to write about the three or four most important theoretical concepts that guide their work when they sit down with a client.

  • Three compelling video cases capture the intake interviews of three diverse clients and their unique presenting problems and concerns. Ranging in age from 17 to 54, these individuals are from diverse ethnic backgrounds, have been referred to counseling from various sources, and present with a range of issues.

  • From each theoretical perspective, users of the website are scaffolded through an analysis of the video cases to help them conceptualize each case using the foundational concepts discussed by the authors in the book. Once users conceptualize a case, they can view the chapter author's conceptualization of the case, as each counselor/therapist answers the same set of questions that the user is asked about each case.
