This introduction to the Ancient Near East includes coverage of Egypt and a balance of political, social, and cultural coverage.

Organized by the periods, kingdoms, and empires generally used in Near Eastern political history, the text interlaces social and cultural history with the political narrative. This combination allows students to get a rounded introduction to the subject of Ancient Near Eastern history. An emphasis on problems and areas of uncertainty helps students understand how evidence is used to create interpretations and allows them to realize that several different interpretations of the same evidence are possible.

• This single volume text covers ancient Egypt as well as Western Asia (Iran, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Palestine-Syria, and Arabia).
• 22 primary source documents (including legal codes, religious texts, treaties, and promissory notes) allow students to see the kinds of evidence from which historians draw their conclusions and the variety of ancient Near Eastern writings.
• A notes section documents the sources of quotations and provides further information on controversies and alternative interpretations. Students can use these notes to better understand the reasons for the interpretation given in the text and to delve more deeply into controversial issues.
• 63 figures, photographs, plans, and drawings, and 17 maps allow students to visualize places, buildings, and objects mentioned in the text while the maps orient them geographically.
• 13 chronological tables and a general chronological chart at the end of the text provide a timeline for major periods, dynasties, and rulers and give students a chronological frame of reference.
• Unfamiliar words or terms used in the text are printed in bold and defined within the text and in the Glossary at the back of the text.
• A list of suggested Web sites, books, and articles for further study and information is given at the end of every chapter organized by topic, allowing students to pursue topics of interest.

• Controversial issues have been highlighted in sections titled “Debating the Evidence.”  It is now easier for students and teachers to find and use the portions of the text devoted to scholarly arguments about the evidence for various aspects of ancient Near Eastern history. In one case (the identity of the predecessor of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun), new evidence has caused the author to change the conclusion he reached in the first edition of this book.
• A new chapter, “The Old Babylonian Period and Its Aftermath” (Chapter 4) has been added to provide more insight into this important period.
• More information on culture and economy has been added, especially in the sections on the Old Babylonian, Neo-Assyrian, and Neo-Babylonian periods.
