Follow a Logical Succession of Material and Events:
  • Chronological Approach. The chronological approach taken in Hughes/Cain gives students a sense of the evolution of events, and how the economic and historical changes have been intertwined throughout nearly four centuries of America’s development.
    • A timeline has also been included on the inside of the front cover of the book as a visual reference for students, helping to remind them of the sequence in which these events occurred.
  • Chronological Period Sections. To help students better understand the evolution of the American economy, this text is organized into five major time periods.

NEW!  Understanding Health and Its Impact on the Economy. The material in Chapter 28 on population has been expanded to include a discussion of health. Specifically, this chapter contains a new subsection on morbidity and the subsection on mortality has been expanded. 

 

Updated!  Chapter 29 includes a revised section about the automobile industry, including new discussion of the current economic recession and its effect on the automobile industry and automakers.

 

Updated!  Chapter 30 has been revised to include discussions of politics and presidential elections, the ‘War on Terror,’ and the current economic crisis, including discussion of steps being taken to improve the quality of life in these times, such as steps to reduce emissions, to promote cleaner air and water and to support safety on the job. This chapter also features a revised section about the ‘roaring 90s’ to present day, including a discussion of income, taxes, social security, unemployment, and regulation and the financial industry. Also highlighted is a discussion of historical recessions and the economy’s ability to recover, as well as predictions that the economy will recover from the current recession.
