Description

For undergraduate courses in Adolescence and Adolescent Development

Focused on a global cultural perspective that incorporates research on adolescence through emerging adulthood.   Grounded in a global cultural perspective (within and outside of the US), this text includes a considerable amount of anthropology, sociology, and international research in addition to the compelling psychological research on adolescent development. This book also takes into account the period of emerging adulthood (ages 18-25), an area sometimes neglected but of particular interest to many students who see themselves reflected in the research.

Features

Create a Custom Text: For enrollments of at least 25, create your own textbook by combining chapters from best-selling Pearson textbooks and/or reading selections in the sequence you want.  To begin building your custom text, visit www.pearsoncustomlibrary.com. You may also work with a dedicated Pearson Custom editor to create your ideal text–publishing your own original content or mixing and matching Pearson content. Emphasizes culture and diversity:

  • Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood employs a cultural approach that informs students about what life is like for young people in cultures different than their own, thus broadening their understanding of the diversity of human development. This text strives have students not only think critically but to learn to think culturally about the studies they examine.

 Highlights global perspectives:

  •  With an emphasis on adolescence and emerging adulthood from varying cultures and a focused global view, students are encouraged to think outside of their own experiences. This also encourages critical thinking as students explore the similarities and differences of world around us.

Emphasizes what is most relevant to student—their own age group:

  • Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood encompasses the age ranges of 18-25. Arnett includes more coverage on this time period than any other adolescence text. Not only is this particular topic area of particular interest to students, who see themselves, reflected in the research, but it is also a growing area of research.

Pedagogical Features:

  • Cultural Focus boxes in each chapter explore in-depth the aspects of development in a specific culture.
  • Historical Focus boxes--emphasize young people's development during a specific historical period.
  • Research Focus boxes--describe the methods used in a specific study in detail.

New To This Edition

General Changes:

  • Enhanced the cultural approach, the inclusion of emerging adulthood, and the quality of the writing.
  • New to this edition: content from Chapter 14 (from the previous edition) titled Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood in the 21st Century, has been integrated throughout the text where appropriate. The text is now a more manageable 13 chapters.
  • Addition of coverage on recent media changes across chapters in addition to the full chapter on media.  For example, in the friends/peers chapter, the role of email, cell phones, and texting is covered.
  • Critical thinking questions have been added to photo, table, and figure captions where appropriate throughout.
  • The addition of new material has been balanced with the removal of dated material to keep the book at about its current length.

Chapter by Chapter Changes:

Chapter 1, Introduction

  • NEW the “Research Focus” box focuses on the Monitoring the Future study, which is also a national study but which is much more important in adolescent research than the “Don’t Call Them Kids” study.
  • ADDED more material on from other countries to the description of emerging adulthood in the section “Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood.”
  • ADDED a section called “Adolescence around the World: A Brief Regional Overview.”

Chapter 2, Biological Foundations

  • Added “incest taboo” as key term. Deleted “distancing hypothesis” and “follicles.”
  • ADDED: “A study of Mexican premenarcheal girls found similarly negative expectations for menarche, based in similarly negative cultural views of menstruation (Marván et al., 2007).”
  • UPDATED to the section on “Early and Late Pubertal Timing”

Chapter 3, Cognitive Foundations

  • UPDATED the section on perspective taking.
  • ADDED: Recent research using fMRI methods shows that synaptic pruning is especially rapid among adolescents with high intelligence (Shaw et al., 2006).
  • ADDED information to material on IQ tests

Chapter 4, Cultural Beliefs

  • Updated section on “Religious Beliefs,”

Chapter 5, Gender

  • Updated “Gender and Globalization” section with a more recent cross-national survey of gender role attitudes.

Chapter 6, The Self

  • Updated material section on self-esteem.

Chapter 7, Family Relationships

  • Updated data on “An American Parenting Style?”

Chapter 8, Friends and Peers

  • Expand section on “Friends and Leisure Activities in Emerging Adulthood” The section
  • Updated “Developmental Changes in Crowds”

Chapter 9, Dating, Love, and Sexuality

  • ADDED: If adolescent romantic relationships often begin as friendships today, what distinguishes a friendship from a romantic relationship?
  • Updated: section on romantic harassment
  • Updated: Cohabitation section: Emerging adults from divorced families are especially likely to cohabit, because they are especially determined to avoid their parents’ fate (Arnett, 2004; Cunningham & Thornton, 2007).
  • Updated: material on adolescent sexual activity.
  • NEW SECTION on Pornography.

Chapter 10, School

  • ADDED material on competition for college spots in Japan (Fackler, 2007).
  • ADDED: material on longitudinal study of over 1,500 adolescents and perceptions of teacher support, autonomy in the classroom, and clarity of school rules and regulations (Way et al., 2007).
  • ADDED to Family Environments and School.
  • ADDED, Family Social Class and School: One recent longitudinal study of adolescents from Mexican, Chinese, and European American backgrounds found that across groups, family stressors predicted academic problems (Flook & Fuligni, 2008).
  • ADDED: Recent research indicates that learning disabilities may indicate deficits in brain development and brain functioning (Brown et al., 2008). However, currently the diagnosis of a learning disability is based not on a neurological test but on a gap between intelligence test scores and academic achievement test scores.
  • ADDED: Most adolescents who have ADHD also have an additional learning disability (Brook & Boaz, 2005). Because so much of school requires sitting quietly in a classroom, adolescents with ADHD often find school to be a stressful, unpleasant experience (Brook & Boaz, 2005).
  • ADDED, on ADHD: Effective behavioral therapies include parent training, classroom interventions, and summer programs (Hoza et al., 2008).
  • ADDED: As of 2007, according to a worldwide survey there were more young women than young men in higher education in 83 of 141 countries, including many developing countries (Economist, 2007).
  • ADDED: material compare university education in Europe and the United States.

Chapter 11, Work

  • ADDED: Adolescents and their families derive several benefits when adolescents work (Larson et al., 2010).
  • ADDED: According to the ILO, from 2002 to 2006 the number of child and adolescent laborers fell 11% worldwide, and the number engaged in hazardous work fell even more, by 26% (ILO, 2006).
  • ADDED: In a more recent book, Murnane and Levy (2004) focus on the growing importance of computer skills, again concluding that high schools are failing to provide adolescents with the knowledge they need to succeed in the new economy.
  • ADDED: Community Service in EA section, A recent longitudinal study reported that 8 years after their service in the program, Americorps volunteers were higher than the comparison group (who expressed interest in Americorps but did not enroll) on understanding of community problems, engagement in civic activity such as attending meetings of community organizations, and overall life satisfaction (Corporation for National and Community Service, 2008).

Chapter 12, Media

  • New sections on My Space and Facebook to this chapter.

Chapter 13, Problems

  • New section on resilience and “positive youth development.” There is a lot of good recent research on this topic.
