This text is integrates the principles of Statics with those of Strength of Materials within a single book, providing strong fundamentals on which students and professionals can build additional skills and knowledge in their chosen specialty.

This book offers instructors in a variety of fields the flexibility to arrange curricula differently from the traditional three-credit course. The emphasis on applications in a variety of fields makes the book attractive for engineering technology, applied engineering, and industrial technology programs (in either associate degree or bachelor degree arrangements).

  • Topics are integrated to a large degree to avoid duplication and to focus on the essential concepts and methods.
    • As topics in statics are presented and in example problems, students are informed of how the subsequent coverage of strength of materials concepts use the results of the statics analyses and references are given to later chapters.
  • The concepts of stress, strain, and deformation are introduced conceptually early in the book so students can relate to the effects produced by the forces and other loads being analyzed using Statics principles.
    • Thus students acquire a qualitative appreciation of why careful determination of forces, torques, and moments is essential to analysis and design.
  • Includes a wide variety of applications in the several fields for which the study of Strength of Materials is needed so students gain an appreciation for related disciplines in addition to their chosen specialties.

  • Presumes students have acquired competencies in the principles of mathematics and physical science to include at least college algebra and trigonometry (pre-calculus) and basic physics mechanics.
    • Uses Calculus primarily in the sections where basic concepts and fundamental equations of strength of materials are developed and they are organized so their use in the course is optional.
    • This approach has been used successfully in all three of the author’s other books. Equilibrium analyses are performed with scalar, non-vector approaches.
  • Units are a mixture of SI metric and U.S. Customary units in keeping with the dual usage evident in U.S. industry and construction.
