Features
Drugs Updates. Each chapter has been updated to include the most current drug names and drug information available — right up to the day of publication. Also, references to reliable and continuously updated web sites have been included in the Instructor’s Manual as sources of information about new drugs as they come on the market.
Visual Enhancements. The quantity and quality of images throughout the book has been greatly increased to include photographs of prescriptions, drug name labels, and drugs being administered to patients.
Drug Alert! This special box appears in most chapters and calls attention to:
unusual and harmful drug effects
sound-alike drug names that could result in taking or administering the wrong drug
drug-drug and drug-food interactions
other areas of special interest that are currently in the news.
Clinical Applications. This new feature helps readers take what they have learned and relate it to actual patient and clinical situations. Some examples:
how pediatric immunizations are given
how the genetic makeup of a person influences drug action
how to avoid theft of prescription pads in the physician’s office
how drug advertising affects consumers
Clinical Applications also appear at the end of some chapters, featuring the following types of job-skill exercises:
Handwritten prescriptions. Challenge students’ ability to read, decipher, and interpret written drug information on a prescription form.
Drug forms. Quiz readers on identifying the pictured drug form.
Drug labels. Pose questions about the specific information on the label.
Patient photographs. Prompt students to link the pictured disease to a particular drug category from that chapter.
Clinical scenarios. Display excerpts from medical case histories with accompanying questions.
