Description

For freshmen- through junior-level courses in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Engineering, Resources Engineering and Technology.

Surveying: Principles and Applications, Eighth Edition presents a clear discussion of the latest advances in technological instrumentation, surveying principles, and applications for mapping and engineering surveys. It has a good selection of problems that illuminate and reinforce concepts, as well as providing up-to-date information on the latest technological innovations. Real-world emphasis is key to the continued success of this text and the success a student has in understanding surveying concepts — so real world, in fact, that it is often carried by graduates into their first day of work. Suitable for construction, civil technology, civil engineering programs, and general surveying

Suitable for construction, civil technology, civil engineering programs, and general surveying.

Hallmark Features
  • Clear connections from theory to the applied world of surveying based on the author's extensive field experience. Provides students with a more interesting and more useful text that gives them a good grasp of the manner in which surveying is carried out in real world applications.
  • Broad coverage, through the inclusion of GIS and satellite imaging along with the more traditional focus of highway geometrics, and construction surveying, this book will act as a comprehensive text for the classroom or as an ongoing resource in the workplace.
  • Focus on Student Success! In-text tools such as chapter questions, problems, related websites, and worked-out examples help ensure student success in the classroom.
  • Easy to read. Gives students the clearest presentation possible of each topic with many illustrations and examples designed to aid comprehension.
  • English and Metric units are listed in all examples and problems. Trains students in both systems to prepare them for whichever system they will encounter on the job.
  • Extensive coverage of key topics–for example, angles/directions/theodolites, total stations & EDM, construction surveys, GIS, photogrammetry/remote sensing and horizontal/vertical curves. Provides students with a more user-friendly treatment of important topics than found in other texts.
  • Glossary. Provides students with an accessible reference tool, not often found in surveying texts.
  • Latest technological innovations—Including photogrammetry, airborne imaging, Lidar, and satellite imaging. Provides students with an understanding of the latest developments in this quickly expanding technological field.

New To This Edition

This edition is updated to include

Part 1, Thoughtfully Reorganized! The order of topic presentation has been revised from the "traditional" presentation to what is more commonly found in the real world today. In addition to reordering of several chapters, Total Stations is now covered in 2 chapters with “Theodolites: and “Applications”.

New instrumentation and new techniques such as ground-based lidar imaging (Trimble VX Spatial Station and Optech’s ILIRS-3DER lidar scanner) have been included, which helps graduates begin their careers on the right foot.

New second color adds greater clarity to illustrations and content.

Author Bios

Mr. Kavanagh's education and professional  backgrounds include a B.A. (Economics) from York University (Toronto) in 1970 and certification through the challenge exam process as a Civil Engineering Technologist (Ontario), and as a Survey Technologist (Ontario). His surveying  experience includes seventeen years of  highway, legal and construction surveys as well as the management of municipal surveys for pre-engineering, design, and construction of municipal services for the City of Scarborough.

Mr. Kavanagh's teaching experience began in 1969 at Seneca College where he designed and taught courses in surveying, computerized/advanced surveying, municipal services design and highway design. In addition he served as Chair of the Civil/Resources Engineering Technology Department (1987-1990), which at its peak had 400 students and 20 faculty.

In 1983, along with S.J.G Bird (deceased 1989), he wrote a textbook on surveying (Surveying Principles and Applications)  and in 1989, he wrote a second text (Surveying with Construction Applications). Both texts, published by Pearson Education/Prentice Hall Inc., USA, have been adopted for use in Civil Engineering programs and Civil Engineering Technology programs in the U.S.A., with wide use also in Canada and some off-shore locations (for example, Singapore, & U.K.).  Additionally, in 2003 he wrote the text Geomatics, for post-secondary Geomatics programs.

Mr. Kavanagh is presently (May, 2008) working on the 8th edition of Surveying Principles and Applications and on the 7th edition of Surveying with Construction Applications.

Topics are presented with numerous real-world examples and illustrations bridging the gap from theory to the applied world of surveying. Three distinct sections present the reader with basic concepts (including distance measurement, leveling, and angles and directions) as well as more advanced topics such as satellite imagery, highway curves, hydrographic surveys, and more!

Key Features:

  • NEW! Part 1 has been thoughtfully reorganized to reflect and accommodate the continual evolution of surveying technology.
  • NEW! The latest instrumentation and techniques are featured, including ground-based lidar imaging such as the new Trimble VX Spatial Station and Optech’s ILIRS-3DER lidar scanner.
  • UPDATED! Modern surveying techniques include aerial- and spaced-based imagery through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • FOCUS ON STUDENT SUCCESS! In-text tools such as chapter questions, problems, related websites, and worked-out examples help ensure that students succeed in the classroom.
  • REAL-WORLD APPLICATION! English and metric units are listed in all examples and problems to help prepare students for whichever system they will encounter on the job.
