Description

The first book in Olsen's vocabulary series, Interactive Vocabulary makes building vocabulary enjoyable with interactive exercises, an engaging four-color design, and high-interest readings.

Intended for students reading at the 6th-9th grade reading level, the third edition offers engaging readings on high-interest topics like popular culture, educational life, personal health, unusual inventions, and famous people, and keeps students interested while showing them how vocabulary is used in the context of a reading passage. The text encourages students to look for context clues to help them figure out the meaning of a word, and an optional CD-ROM with word pronunciations adds additional exercises.

Features

  • Thematic readings open every chapter. The readings focus on high-interest topics like movies, music, mysteries, sports stars, friendship, personal finance, and resume writing to keep students interested and engaged in the material.
  • Four Self-Tests in a variety of formats offer practice with a chapter’s ten vocabulary words. The tests also help to develop critical thinking skills.
  • Interactive exercises near the end of a chapter motivate students to actively use the words, get them writing, encourage class participation, and make learning fun.
  • Students monitor how well they are retaining word meanings in the carefully placed Review chapters (Ch. 9, 17, and 26).
  • Three Word Parts chapters introduce prefixes, roots, and suffixes used throughout the text, and six exercises per Word Parts chapter give students a chance to practice using the word parts.
  • Create Your Own Flash Cards section explains how students can make and use their own flash cards and provides templates to get the students started.
  • Interactive Vocabulary CD-ROM (ISBN: 0-321-39673-1) includes an audio component to aid students with pronunciation as well as additional interactive exercises. The CD-ROM is $3 when packaged with the text (Valuepack ISBN: 0-321-43790-X).
  • Instructor’s Manual and Test Bank provides ideas for collaborative activities and games to use for individual chapters or to review several chapters. The Test Bank includes three tests per chapter as well as tests for the Review chapters and final exams.

New To This Edition

  • In-Chapter Organization as been refined so that the Word List is now at the end of each chapter.  This enables students to do the Predicting exercise without accidentally looking at the Word List below. The last page of each chapter contains the Word List and the Words to Watch exercise. Instructors can now have students rip out the self-tests to hand in and not lose the thematic reading for the next chapter.
  • Over half of the chapters have new readings in either topics or formats more likely to appeal to students. Part II includes the new theme “The Unusual.” Additionally, new words have been added to some chapters. Photographs have also been added to several of the readings for more visually friendly chapters.
  • New content has been added throughout the text including hints for every chapter, a list of the Word Parts in the inside back cover, and an extended analogies explanation with practice exercises in the Getting Started chapter.
  • A new Predicting Exercise Format will now have students writing out the definition from a choice of five definitions instead of picking from A to C. Writing the definition will help students better remember the meaning of a word.
  • The Analogies Appendix has been moved to the Getting Started chapter to allow students a chance to work with analogies before they start the self-tests. The section has been updated and renamed Completing Analogies, offering a greater explanation on how to complete analogies and offers practice exercises.
  • Several new lively, sophisticated, college-level photographs and energetic artwork appeal to visual learners.
  • The CD-ROM that accompanies Interactive Vocabulary has been updated to include more effective and relevant exercises.
