Description

This text, intended for a graphing calculator required precalculus course, shows students when and how to use concepts, and promotes real understanding not just rote memorization. In addition, the graphing calculator is used as a tool to help explain ideas rather than merely to find answers. The book reflects AMATYC, MAA, and NCTM guidelines, and makes use of real world data in presenting a balanced algebraic and graphical approach to understanding precalculus concepts. The result is a thorough preparation for the calculus course.

Features

  • Annotated Instructor's Edition offers additional instructor support and answers to all exercises.
  • The authors focus on the balance between presenting concepts graphically and algebraically (symbolically).
  • Section opening “What You Will Learn and Why” point out the objectives and usefulness of the material in that section.
  • The Prerequisite chapter reviews important algebraic techniques allowing students from varying mathematical backgrounds to refresh their algebraic skills.
  • The Twelve Basic Functions are emphasized throughout the book as a major theme and focus. General characteristics of important kinds of functions such as sinusoids are also highlighted.
  • Looking Ahead to Calculus icons appear next to topics that are especially important in calculus, and help motivate students' interest.
  • At the end of every in-text example students are directed to “Now Try” a specific exercise. This feature encourages students to immediately try an exercise and test their comprehension of concepts illustrated in the example.
  • Math at Work essays at the end of chapters illustrate how mathematics is used on the job.
  • The increased number and diversity of applications enrich student learning.
  • Easier exercises have been added when needed to help the average student assimilate the concepts. Exercise sets have been restructured so that their order follows that of the examples and more closely matches the instruction in the lesson.
  • Quick review exercises begin each exercise set, and help prepare students to undertake the exercises. Included are references to appropriate instruction when students find they are unable to do the problems.
  • Writing to Learn exercises prompt students to reflect on what they have learned to solidify their understanding.
  • Group Activity exercises can be used for both in-class and homework assignments.
  • Extending the Ideas exercises promote deeper understanding.
  • Standardized Test Items have been added to every exercise set. These include two multiple-choice exercises and two true-false items that ask for explanations when answers are false.
  • Key Ideas with page references at the end of each chapter provide a helpful review.
  • At the end of each chapter, a glossary of key terms is provided. In addition, the summary has been redesigned to make it easier for students to use to study.

New To This Edition

  • Section 1.3 now includes 12 basic functions instead of 10. The greatest integer function and the logistics function have been added. Step functions in general are discussed in more detail, including their continuity.
  • Chapter 2 has been slightly reorganized to put more emphasis on the basic function 1/x. The subject matter of the old Section 2.7, Rational Functions and Equations has been split into 2 sections: 2-7: Graphs of Rational Functions and 2-8: Solving Equations in One Variable. This change was made so that the text would emphasize analysis of the reciprocal function as a basic function and as the parent function for all the transformations that result in all rational functions. The coverage of power functions was trimmed back.
  • The topic of values of special angles on the unit circle has slightly more emphasis without focusing on rote memorization.
  • A logic appendix has been added.
