Description

Perfect for instructors who want to use the Internet in their American government course, this is a web/text hybrid that uses the power of the Internet to instruct and engage today's students.

The FlexChoice Edition consists of two components: a streamlined, spiral-bound text that lies flat so students can use with ease at a computer, and a robust website that contains a multitude of highly interactive, in-depth exercises, interactive maps and graphics, quizzes and surveys, videos, web links, and more. Icons in the text refer students to specific exercises and assets on the book's password-protected website that they can engage in to learn more about the topic being discussed in the text. The icons tie the text and website together so that they form one, powerful, cohesive system. Offering the best of O'Connor & Sabato's highly esteemed textbook and the best exercises and resources for American government on the Web, this FlexChoice Edition will get today's students engaged in the study of our political system.

Features

Text Features:
  • Very brief, core text in a spiral-bound, workbook format. This is a modified version of the Essentials version of O'Connor & Sabato's textbook.
Website Features:
  • Online course management. Created in CourseCompass, the website offers complete online course management for instructors. Instructors can assess student work online, distribute course materials, communicate with students, doing quizzing and testing, create a class roster and grade book, and much more.
  • "How Much Do You Know?" Survey: Rather than a formal "pre-test," these questions, at the beginning of each chapter, ask questions related to the chapter's main topics and are meant to pique students' interest in the chapter material.
  • Quick Quizzes: Icons to these appear after every major section in the text. Quick Quizzes, consisting of 10 questions each, give students the chance to make sure they've grasped the topic material and promote knowledge retention.
  • Simulations: In these highly engaging activities, students gain a deeper understanding of aspects of our system by actually experiencing them—learning by doing. Students are put in the role of political actor, given an objective to reach, and the "rules of the game" (pedagogical direction). Students get feedback at every step, which ensures they understand the consequences of their decisions, and why they got things right or wrong. Some of their roles: big city mayor, police officer, campaign consultant, and member of Congress. Icons to these Simulations appear the end of each chapter in the text.
  • "Analyzing the Data" Interactive Graphics: With pop-up glosses and explanations, students interact with these graphics—tables, charts, and graphs—to help them develop their visual literacy skills. This feature both guides students through understanding visual representations of data and asks students to answer critical thinking questions about the data presented.
  • Interactive Maps: With clickable statistics and pop-up windows, these interactive maps will illustrate and animate important concepts. Also included are static maps which will be accompanied by critical thinking questions.
  • Policy in Action: Presenting students with the various sides of hot, current topics in American politics, this feature engages students in an activity where they analyze the issue and reach their own conclusions.
  • Video clips: Brief video clips of famous speeches, news coverage of events, etc. that will illustrate concepts and engage students.
  • Participation Activities: These activities, which ask students to explore their own beliefs and positions on a variety of topics, increase student interest in the course material by personalizing our political system.
  • Timelines: Guiding students throughout the evolution of an aspect of government or of a political issue, these interactive timelines will bolster the historical knowledge of today's students (who are often under prepared in history) and ask them to critically consider where the topic is heading in the future.
  • International Comparison Exercises: By comparing and contrasting aspects of our system to those of countries around the world, these exercises help students to explore the world and to gain a deeper understanding of what makes our system distinctive.
  • Web Explorations: Provide students with an opportunity to explore important concepts in more depth on the web.
  • Try It!: Interactive exercises that encourage students to think critically about primary concepts in each chapter.
  • Chapter Quiz: 10 multiple choice questions to test students' retention and understanding of chapter material.
