  • Pinel places strong emphasis on behavior: new chapter opening photos illustrate the role of biopsychology in the human world. Social issues are presented in a fashion that makes them relevant to the students; sex, hunger, sleep, and drug addiction are topics that are presented in a balanced, and even sometimes humorous manner.
  • Diversity is a solid theme of the text, with Pinel exploring the convergence of both human and non-human research, as well as both pure and applied research.


New To This Edition

  • Four themes—“Thinking about Biopsychology,” “Clinical Implications,” “The Evolutionary Perspective,” and “Cognitive Neuroscience”—are integral to each chapter and their placement is indicated by marginal icons.
  • At the end of each chapter, a “Themes Revisited” section neatly summarizes the themes and provides some context for the topics discussed.
  • The table of contents has been reorganized into six parts. Brain damage and neuroplasticity are discussed in the same chapter. Development of the nervous system is now covered in its own chapter (Ch. 9), and learning is discussed alongside memory and amnesia (Ch. 11). The section on thirst has been eliminated, and finally, a new chapter has been added on the biology of psychiatric disorders (Ch. 18).
  • After major sections within a chapter, a “Brain Scan” section provides study questions so that a student can check his or her knowledge before proceeding, aiding in the retention of information.
  • “Think About It” questions provide the students with an opportunity to think critically about the material they have read.
  • “The Case of” boxes introduce fascinating, true case studies that relate clinical applications to real-life.
  • “Log On” sections appear at the end of each chapter, providing a bulleted list of interesting Web sites related to chapter topics, with a brief description of each site.
  • A second, more student-friendly title has been added beneath the main title of each chapter to make the book even more student accessible.
