Features

Innovative Presentation of Study Skills
  • In addition to comprehensive coverage of traditional study skills, this text includes critical topics not often found in other study skills texts—Lifelong learning, learning styles and self-awareness, critical thinking, mastering library and Internet research skills, and writing effectively.
  • Critical thinking focus—Chapter 4 is devoted entirely to critical thinking and its relationship to effective studying. Critical thinking is also emphasized throughout the text. Material on each of the major study skills contains discussions of how critical thinking is involved in that particular skill. For example Chapter 6 contains a section on responding critically to what you read, Chapter 9 helps students use critical thinking when taking notes, and Chapter 10 emphasizes the use of critical thinking when evaluating research material.
  • Lifelong learning focus—The first chapter sets the tone with a discussion of why lifelong learning is important and shows how to use what you learn to build a successful career. Throughout the text, examples show how continued education will benefit students in environments other than college.
  • Working world focus—Study skills that are learned in college will be used throughout the students' career and life. This text shows how each study skill comes into play on the job, illustrating to students that the work they do in school will serve them long after they graduate.
  • Technology—The text weaves technology into the material wherever it is relevant. Chapter 10 contains a section on Internet research, and Chapter 14 contains a section on using computer technology.
  • Media literacy—The critical thinking and reading chapters describe media literacy and provide information about how to take in and critically evaluate information that comes through the media.
Skill Building
  • End-of-chapter exercises—Each Chapter has a series of exercises entitled Study Skills in Action, which are designed to reinforce knowledge of chapter material, build vocabulary, and hone test-taking skills.
  • Test Competence: Measuring What You've Learned—Includes 10 multiple-choice questions and five true/false questions.
  • Brain Power: Building Vocabulary Fitness—A vocabulary-building exercise with new words from excerpted magazine and newspaper articles.
  • Strategic Thinking: Getting the Big Picture—A journal-type exercise that builds critical thinking and writing skills while encouraging the application of chapter content to students' lives.
  • End-of-part exercises—At the end of each of the four parts is a set of exercises entitled Skill Building: Understanding Concepts as Well as Details. This set of exercises encourages the students to link together concepts that they have learned in that part's chapters.
  • Making Connections—Includes five multiple-choice questions, five true/false questions, 10 fill-in-the-blank questions, and 10 matching questions.
  • The Essay question—Requires a written subjective answer; the question is based on an excerpt (included in the text) from a current college textbook.
  • The Teamwork question—Brings students together in groups to perform an exercise that builds teamwork skills.
Learning Enhancement Features
  • Expert insight—Each chapter contains two to three boxed quotes that contain advice from noted experts and successful professionals. The experts talk about their personal study-skills experiences, struggles, and successes.
  • Visual learning—The visuals help to engage the reader more actively and provide visual reference points that clarify text. One entire chapter, Chapter 7, focuses on visual elements and how to read and use them. Each chapter has a visual summary—a mind map—that outlines the chapter topics, subtopics, and examples in visual format. Tables and figures reinforce material in every chapter.
