Description

BASIC APPROACH A supplement for courses in Production and Operations Management, Quantitative Methods, Management Science, or Operations Research. DS for Windows is the most user-friendly Windows software available for production and operations management, quantitative methods, management science, and operations research. A software/user's manual package, it features 30 separate modules covering topics in both operations management and management science. Continued author support is available via e-mail and downloadable upgrades are available via the Web (www.prenhall.com/weiss). Windows 95 Look and Feel

Features

  • Files and file saving—Now allows long file names; more options for opening and saving files in the standard Windows 95 dialog box; the ability to create folders from within the dialog box rather than having to use File explorer (the old File Manager).
  • A new look and feel of the toolbars—Now includes three toolbars, each of which can be hidden, moved or customized by the user as is the current standard.
  • Windows 95 help files—Now includes a contents tab, full-text searching, and improved copying.
    • Allows viewers to view the help file in a familiar “tree” fashion similar to program manager or explorer; to search for text anywhere in the help file; and to select and copy text from any help file. Ex.___

Functionality
  • The ability to save files as Excel files—Available for most (but not all) of the modules. When it is used, the program creates an Excel file that contains not only the data but also either the formulas for the solution or a spreadsheet that is ready to be solved by using Solver.
  • Greatly enhanced formatting and printing options.
    • Allows users to format a table on the screen and then print the table as it is formatted; to change the font size and print in color (for regular, normal fast printing); and to change printers (including to a fax) if more than one printer is available. Ex.___

  • More help options.
    • Allows users to send e-mail messages directly to Prentice-Hall for program help; and to use the software itself to point directly to the software upgrades or to the manual at the Prentice-Hall web site. Ex.___

  • Improved display for modules that have multiple graphs.
    • Enhances the user-friendliness of the package. Ex.___

  • More flexibility.
    • Users may set options to have either the data shown or the solution shown when a file is opened, an option to automatically save the data after data entry is complete, an option to solve the problem after data entry is complete, an option to change the default titles for problems/data sets and several other options. Ex.___

  • An option to save as HTML.
    • Provides users with a convenient tool for posting to the Internet. Ex.___

New Modules
  • Work Measurements module.
    • Provides users with three submodules for time study, sample size computation for time study and work sampling.

  • Capital Investment Module.
    • Allows users to compute the Net Present Value or Internal Rate of Return of a cash flow.

  • Productivity Module.
    • Helps users determine the productivity in a given period or for comparing the changes in productivity over several periods.

  • Statistics Module.
    • Offers users a convenient tool for computing the mean and standard deviation of either a probability distribution or a population.

Module Enhancements
  • The breakeven module—Now allows for up to five different options rather than limiting the choices to three.
  • Quality control—Now includes Process Capability.
  • Reliability—Includes two new modules for easily computing the reliability of systems that contain identical parallel or serial components.
  • Project management—Contains a model for entering the mean and standard deviation of the activities.
  • Inventory—Adds a reorder point to the economic order quantity model.
  • Linear regression—Features an option to enter the x value to use to create a forecast, and a submodel to enter a (multiple) regression equation, values for the independent variables and receive a forecast.
  • Lot sizing—Now includes the possibility of stockouts, and an order release column when there is a lead time.
